Kids Furniture and Your Home
Children are the heart of the family. Most families make room for children even before they are born. When mom is pregnant, a room is usually turned into a nursery, renovating it as the child grows from a kid's room and then later into a teenager's room. This means constant redecoration and renovation of the room and recycling or buying new kids furniture.
The most common kids furniture are beds, seats, tables and play furniture. Most kids furniture are made for childrens' rooms such as bedrooms, playrooms and nurseries. Kids Furniture also includes armories, benches, bookcases, chests, closet storage, desks, dressers, media centers, nightstands, toy storage, and vanities. Decorative furniture for kids are baskets, bookends, clocks, coat racks, hampers, jewelry boxes, lamps, mirrors, room dividers, step stools and wall decals. There are also kids furniture for playtime such as activity tables, art easels, dollhouses, globes, exercise equipments, mats, play kitchens, playhouses, rocking horses, sandboxes, train tables, wagons, and work benches.
When you are in the stages of designing a home, and you have plans of having a family make a room or two for possible children. If you already have a family, make sure they have their own space if not their own room.
Childrens' rooms are usually the smaller rooms so plan carefully the things that you are going to get for them. Try to buy furniture that serves several purposes. An example would be a headboard that also serves as a bookcase with overhead lights. If you have two children sharing the same room, get a double deck or bunk bed. Adding a pull-out bed would be a great idea for a cousin or friend who's visiting overnight.
Make sure that the furniture you are getting is child proofed. They should be safe even with the rowdiest of kids to avoid accidental injuries. The bunk beds should have safety railings and ladders that are attached firmly and strong enough to carry the weight and withstand any abuse it may get from the rowdiest of kids. Make sure the paint on the furniture is lead free especially if used for babies or toddlers who like to suck on anything then can get their gums into. Check for splinters especially with wood furnishings. Avoid furniture with sharp edges and corners or you can place soft guards on them.
Designing kids room is fun. If your child is old enough to know what he or she wants, let her help design the room. You can set a theme for the room or you can match the motif to that of your house. If you are getting old heirloom items, you can either enhance it or reinvent it. Paint it to look like the antique that it is or you can paint it with contemporary colors and add some stickers or designs to give it a modern look.
